The Guildhall
Just a short walk from The James Suites, the Guildhall is one of the most iconic landmarks in Derry. Known for its red sandstone architecture, stained-glass windows, and historical exhibits, the building also hosts regular events and cultural showcases. Outside, you’ll find the Peace Flame and the city square, often buzzing with markets and street performers.
Derry’s City Walls
These 17th-century walls surround the old city and are among the best-preserved in Europe. Stretching over a mile, they offer a unique elevated path to walk along while viewing original gates, bastions, and cannons. Along the way, you’ll see murals, churches, and views across both the Bogside and the River Foyle.
The Museum of Free Derry
Located in the Bogside area, this museum tells the story of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland from a local perspective. Through personal accounts, photographs, and original artefacts, it explains the events of the Troubles, including Bloody Sunday. It’s a powerful and informative visit that offers historical context to the city.
Peace Bridge
Spanning the River Foyle, the Peace Bridge is a modern pedestrian and cycle bridge connecting Ebrington Square to the city centre. It’s especially popular for a morning walk or sunset stroll, with scenic river views and easy access to restaurants, public art, and the regenerated waterfront area.
St. Columb’s Cathedral
Built in 1633, this is the oldest surviving building in Derry and an excellent example of Planter architecture. Inside, you’ll find historical records, memorials, and a peaceful atmosphere. The cathedral’s hilltop location also offers panoramic views over the city.
Ebrington Square
Once a military barracks, Ebrington Square has been transformed into a large public space for events, food markets, and festivals. It’s just across the Peace Bridge and is home to cafes, art installations, and the Walled City Brewery — a local favourite for dining and craft beer.
